FAQ's

MY DOG HAD A NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE EITHER WITH ANOTHER DOG OR A HUMAN. NOW HE IS AFRAID OF EVERYTHING. IS THERE SOMETHING WE CAN DO?

Yes.. dogs sometimes have a negative experience when they are attacked by another dog or mistreated by a human or trainer. These issues can, in most cases be repaired. With proper confidence building drills and lots of praise, it is possible to rebuild a dog’s self-esteem and give them the confidence they need to be a normal dog again.

Do you offer group classes? Do they cost less than individual lessons?

NORTON DOG TRAINING OFFERS GROUP CLASSES TO ENHANCE SOCIALIZATION & TRAINING SKILLS

These classes are great for you and your dog. These classes provide ample distractions that make for a better training environment for your dog. These classes also allow you to train with others to see how they do it and what works and does not work. These classes are generally less than one on one classes as you do a lot of the work yourself. They have many benefits as well other than cost savings.

WHAT METHOD OF TRAINING DO YOU USE?

We use positive reinforcement as the foundation of our training.

At Norton Dog Training we use a simple leash work coupled with praise and positive reinforcement. We have found that most behavioral issues go away with obedience. Most obedience is taught simply with a leash as well as persistent and consistent training. The reward for good behavior and positive progression is praise and we give tons of it.
We also are very educated in E-Collar usage and training. If the E-Collar suits you and your dog, Norton will help you train to use the collar effectively and correctly without causing mental or physical harm to your dog.

IS THERE A MINIMUM OR MAXIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT FOR MY DOG?

We suggest a puppy training start at 10 to 12 weeks old.  This is a good time to establish your training and behavior routine for the first 10 to 16 weeks in the puppy’s new home. We do require that your dog has completed his or her first round of vaccines.

DO YOU USE TREATS OR TOYS FOR REWARDS DURING TRAINING?

Fact: Treats are generally the fastest way to get a dog to learn something.
However, treats are not used in our training for several reasons, but the overwhelming #1 reason is that the use of treats do not reinforce your position as a pack leader. The touch you give when you extend your hand in praise coupled with a good boy/girl is worth 1000 treats.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED FOR TRAINING?

Norton Dog Training will advise you on the appropriate equipment at your free consultation in preparation for your first lesson.
